Top 10 Tips for a very nut-free Christmas
Not a definitive list and in no particular order, simply a few ideas that might help with your first nut-free Christmas and beyond...
- Risky Christmas treats (usually containing nuts) include: Christmas pudding, mince pies, Christmas cake, stuffing, chocolate assortments, pralines and marzipan. Scrutinise all packaging, both ingredients and allergy advice to check suitability.
- Don't drink too much alcohol as this may impair your judgement and may lead to a carefree attitude to food.
- Make your own nut-free versions of puddings, cakes, mince pies, stuffing and sweets
- Always carry emergency medication and have somebody available who knows how to use it.
- Offer to take nut-free versions of traditionally nutty food to family/friends parties. You'll feel more relaxed and the host will usually be happy for you to help.
- Be extra vigilant with small children in party situations, particularly if they have a tendency to be a human hoover. I recently caught a 5 year old attempting to feed my toddler a handful of peanuts.
- Ring ahead whenever eating out and let people know about you/your child's allergy.
- Shop around for nut-free versions of festive food. Check our nonut food links for suggested manufacturers.
- Be assertive when asking if something contains nuts. If the waiter/party host is unsure make sure it's checked or don't touch it.
- Avoid stealing Christmas kisses from nut-nibblers. It can trigger a reaction.
